Painting the animal inside us
Self taught. Schooled in architecture.
Nokuthula Mpofu paints African animal totems and the people who carry them. Lion, panther, elephant, cheetah. Each one stands for a tribe, a family, a self. Her work sits between surrealism and expressionism: real faces, impossible meetings, paint thrown across the canvas.
The union of strength and vulnerability, fierceness and gentleness, and protection and love.
